Atheists can be anything. Atheists can believe all kind of strange things.
But what is your definition of souls? p.s. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!
I put no....I do not believe humans have souls... I don't know of any evidence AND you say HUMANS...where is the evidence and for, and for what reason do you think humans are a special case? Unless you are including the possibility for other living things too? But once again....no evidence. We have a mind in our brains....I know of no evidence of anything eternal within us or that we have something immaterial, a 'soul' that out lives us. I mean our energy is still left after we die....but if we're dead what good does that do...just as a corpse? I know of no evidence of any afterlife....and if our brain was damaged before we died - how would we recover in the afterlife anyway? I have no idea how that would work and I don't know of any afterlife or soul at all. So no I don't believe in a souls or afterlife...whether human or any other living thing - I don't believe in souls or an afterlife. And however much I'd want to believe....that's not going to add a shred of evidence to it - that doesn't make it true. EvF EDIT: For some reason I read it that you were a spiritual atheist Theo, but your views just say 'Curious'. - so I thought your question was rhetorical. Yes atheists can be spiritual. Atheists simply don't believe in God(s) as in a supernatural being, creator, designer, etc - everything else is entirely optional. Atheism is not a belief...its just ONE specified absence of a belief....nothing more in and of itself. Like I said - the rest is optional.
What is the soul? I think it's an imaginary concept, nothing more nothing less!
Where is your soul? To oriental people I'm told they think it's in the stomach. In westerners it's said in the head to be floating above the head, but that doesn't seem right to me, I'd place it in the chest.
I think the soul could also be described as your God spot. The part of you that can accommodate God. If he isn't there, you can fill it with other stuff like shopping, materialism, greed etc etc, which are all negative and bring you down. Not saying that being a Christian is the only way to be healthy, but it makes clear & simple guidelines to stop the rot. I often think of Atheism as stripping down religion and finding out the truth about human spirituality. And achieving it where the religious fail absolutely.
Thanks for your answers!
@EvidenceVsFaith - I don't subscribe to any religion so I describe my self atheist but at the same time I am curious to find out more about where we all came from. @ @leo-rcc - Thanks for the welcome. I'd define souls just as that article did, as the metaphysical side of us that shapes who we are and who we go on to be in the afterlife. Just curious as to what it actually does now :S (March 18, 2009 at 5:33 am)theo Wrote: @leo-rcc - Thanks for the welcome. Just curious as to what it actually does now :S Well if you go with souls as described in the article, then no, I do not believe humans have souls. I do not believe in a afterlife either or in reincarnation. But that doesn't mean other atheists don't either, they can if they want to.

Have you ever seen a soul?
I've never seen one. I saw the sky today, and the sun, and my keyboard. No soul though. I searched and searched and searched. No luck. I guess today I don't believe in them. Maybe tomorrow! ![]() Wait. I remember where I've seen one, here! S O U L That's a soul right?

How many radio-waves have you seen today?
Or microwaves? I haven't seen any but I'm inclined to believe they exist because I can see them having an effect in the world. If humans had souls, what would their effects be like? Life? Although I'm not saying your wrong to not believe in souls, I'd say it's rather narrow-minded not too believe in anything you can't see. :S
Show me a soul and I'll believe in a soul.
