It's not fair to judge him by today's standards though. Everyone was a moron back then.

Paul thinks the Cretan prophet was telling the truth when he declared all Cretans are liars. If all Cretans are liars, the Cretan prophet who said that Cretans are liars is also a liar, meaning the statement is false, meaning not all Cretans are liars, meaning the prophet is a liar, meaning that not all Cretans are liars, meaning the prophet is a liar, and so on. Paul declares the statement to be true when it can't be.

I get it now..., but don't think it means that every statement always has to be a lie.

So he's declaring what he knows to be hyperbole to be the truth?

Every and always, are rarely all inclusive.   But even so, I don't think "always liars" is equivalent to "always lying".... but you have me curious, I want to look at the Greek, when I get home.

One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." This saying is true, except for in this case where I'm saying it, as I need to - just this once - give this chap the benefit of the doubt and grant that, while he is a liar, he isn't lying in this particular instance...so as to get my point across. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith.

Dodgy Glob...

Do liars HAVE To Lie all the time?

No. a Liar is simply someone who is comfortable lying.

Therefore when Paul identifies the truth in what the cretan prophet said, your contradiction looses all traction.

You have confused someone caught lying with the definition of a liar. You "paradox" can only exist if the claim was the cretan prophet was lying when he said... and Paul confirmed the lie.

thank you

Begs the question.

Where in what I said did you derive that there are unsuitable scripture?

an assertion such as 'all scripture is suitable' is generally responded to with a "Praise Jesus!!" or "Amen!!" or "Hallelujah!!",

so if that is what your reply boils down to, it looks like we're on the same page. Still, it wasn't all that clear to me that was what you meant.

Um, Praise Jesus!
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

what makes you think what was said by the Cretan prophet was not meant to be taken literally?

Are you still working on the wrong definition of the word liar?

Again a liar is someone who takes no issue lying, which means that person feels as comfortable telling a lie as telling the truth. it does not mean one has to be lying when ever he is speaking.

That being the case what the prophet is saying is that his people just as soon lie to you as tell you the truth if a lie would better serve them. So then why would this observation be considered to be hyperbole if it represents a cultural truth?
