Probably something to do with people splitting up.

I wish my parents had split up. A toxic environment is not better than a single parent.

Dude. So all the fathers to the kids of those single mothers died? Don't exist? Not having custody does not make them stop being fathers. It takes two to make a baby.

Pretty sure the point is that for every single mother, there's a single father, discounting those who died or abandoned the family.

Also, I'm pretty sure the disparity in custody arises from the inclination of courts in America at least to prefer maternal custody unless the mother is unfit.

Nobody's beating around the bush, boo. You asked why there are so many single mothers. I think your question is loaded. I think it's biased. A better question would be why there are so many single parents.
