I'm an "American" who prefers "USian", mostly because I've had more than one friend from Mexico or South America who takes offense to the US' hijacking of the term "American".

Everyone else in the Hemisphere are referred to by their national origin. They can also be referred to by their continental origin, such as Mexicans being referred to a a North American or a Bolivian being referred to as a South American. That's like a Belgium being referred to as an European or a Indonesian being referred to as an Asian. Belgians (Belgium is what you call the country, not it's inhabitants) ARE Europeans and Indonesians ARE Asian, dipsh*t... If I'm talking about Belgians, Germans and Dutch - I may choose the word "Europeans". if I don't need to be more specific. Same with different nations living on the continent called "America".

But wait, we own the Western Hemisphere, James Monroe said so!

Sidebar: My use of the term 'USians' isn't meant to be offensive, it is a shorthand I adopted a long time ago for 'US citizens'. I used to use the term 'Yanks' for people from the US, but that made crowds of you spin out of control for some unfathomable reason (kidding - I fathom it). I dislike the term 'Americans', since most USians I talk to don't speak Cherokee.
And Thump? 'Limey' is RIGHT OUT, GET IT?? Mick, Paddy, bog-trotter, muck savage, pot-licker, shant, SID, turf-cutter, taig or wic I can deal with. But call me 'limey' one more time, and I'll arrange to have someone visit you in the small hours and put a ferret up your jumper. Boru
