Your favorite role-playing video games
I just compiled a top 50 games list for another forum I frequent, and people noticed how RPG heavy my list was.

Final Fantasy 7, Earthbound, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, and Skyrim were in my top 10 (the other 3 in my top 10 were Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and Portal 2). I guess I never really noticed how big of an impact RPG's had on me, and how much I think they should have a bigger cut of the gaming calendar. I love the morality options that some give you, and I love it's long format storytelling.

What about you? What are some of your favorites, and is it your favorite genre?

I don't really play many RPGs myself, but Skyrim was fun.

I will miss some, but here's a handful of them that I absolutely love. And yes, this is my favorite genre.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Grandia II
Morrowind
Skyrim
Dragon Age: Origins
Mount and Blade: Warband
Secret of Mana
Knights of the Old Republic
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Is Leisure Suit Larry considered an RPG?

It's my personal opinion that RPG's are largely overrated. I just cannot understand all the love that Final Fantasy games get.

Skyrim is awesome, though. I'm a sucker for first-person action/RPG's like that and Fallout.

I liked the Mass Effect series, but I wouldn't call it a role playing series. More like an action game with roleplaying elements.

I loved Morrowind because it offered something entirely novel at it's time. I liked NWN II, Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age Insquisition. The Fallout series, with Fallout New Vegas being my favorite. Pillars of Eternity is also one of my favorites.

Been playing Tyranny, which just came out. Fucking sick.

Abaris, you like Pillars, you'll like Tyranny. Same developers.

RE: Your favorite role-playing video games
I'm a sucker for escapism. Games that take up a lot of my time and give me an illusion of freedom, control and progress, that I feel I lack in reality, are right up my alley. Having said that - I haven't played too many RPGs, partly because I'm usually initially put off by fantasy genre conventions and/or gimmicky, over-complicated GUIs, and partly because once I do get into one, I can spend months playing it almost exclusively. Also - I never even finished many of my favorite RPGs, especially the ones with sandbox-style worlds, like Skyrim. I usually just f*ck around and grind, doing anything and everything but the main quests, until I get bored, or hit a spell of depression and stop playing altogether.

Some of RPGs I have fond memories of are:
Knights Of Xentar
Shadowrun - the one on Sega Genesis
Vagrant Story
Fallout 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas
Final Fantasy VII, IX... and I guess X and XII
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Skyrim, especially the latter
DC Universe Online (MMORPG)
Dark Souls 1 and 2
Mass Effect, as well as Fable 2 and 3 probably also deserve a mention

I've yet to find any Obsidian game to dislike. FNV was Obsidian too, as was NWNII.
