It's hard to keep friends when, like me, you're too right for the left and too left for the right.

If The Flintstones have taught us anything, it's that pelicans can be used to mix cement.

My mother has a plaque hanging in her garage that reads, "A friend is someone who will bail you out of jail. A real friend is someone who's sitting next to you saying, 'Man, wasn't that fun?'" And my dad used to say, "A friend isn't someone who tells you what you want to hear, a friend is someone who tells you what you need to hear." (January 23, 2017 at 4:25 pm)Mamacita Wrote: Wait. By unfriending people that try to justify racism or the mimicking of special needs, I'm making a mistake? I disagree. I would not enjoy sharing time with someone of such values, so why would I waste that time? Like I said over and over again, I don't unfriend people just for thinking differently, but I do have principles. I don't need to be friends with a racist or a bully to hear what they have to say. Some people take the whole concept of being open minded to a whole other level. Fuck being friends with someone who can address making fun of a person with cerebral palsy and think it's acceptable behavior. What part of that is irrational? Have you read the rest of the thread, or did you stop at the OP? If you read the rest and still think I'm making a mistake, then I'll agree to disagree. I don't waste friendships on bullies. I can't work around that. You wouldn't even know the justifications that someone would have. Because you unfriended that person. So how would you even know that they are justifying racism???? You wouldn't know anything about why people voted for Trump, because that in and of itself is a disqualifier for you. That's why it's closed minded. Yes, I'd be extremely curious how Trump voters justify the racism around his campaign. I'd be extremely curious how they justify the racism and what the other concerns they have that override the negative stuff. I'd be extremely interested to hear their opinion on that. Especially the non racists who voted for Trump. In some counties in the rust belt 40%~ of people who voted for Obama changed their vote to Trump. Are those people racist? If I knew any of them personally, I'd be extremely interested to hear why they voted for Trump. Because I have an open mind and a natural curiosity.
Someone who voted for Trump may not be racist, anti gay or a misogynist, but they decided racism, LGBTQ intolerance and misogyny wasn't a deal breaker. That's all the justification I need.

Trump is fucking disgusting.
I support Mamacita completely in her decision to unfriend. @ Thal Very well said. I tend to feel like a lot of these people have good intentions and I try to get along with everyone but... that's very well explained. RE: Dumping friends over politics or religion

This thread should've been titled "Dumping people over politics or religion" because if you dumb your friends over such petty issues you're just sad. Hell, my long time bud of around 13 years is a hardcore feminist, doesn't mean we don't break his balls about it though.

I also don't entertain people who do.

Actually, this seems at least slightly similar to boycotting a business, now that that's been brought up here lately as well. If I don't see a problem with someone boycotting a business they would otherwise enjoy because of politics, I'd also be okay with "boycotting" someone who would usually be a friend as well. I'm not sure how directly I'd draw the lines between the two yet, though.
