We all should be checking them everywhere. I bet there are scads of INCORRECT 10 Commandment monuments of church properties coast to coast.
Hey, they went to the bother of a schism, they can fucking get their damn monuments correct or they can remove them.

Talk about inaction stirring the pot.
Some klan retard filed a lawsuit. A judge issued a temporary restraining order for 6 months.
Nice work, your honor. Way to uphold the public interest.
Took a while to find it. Lots of Charlottesville hits on Google these days!

Okay, so I guess I was wrong about these newer statues. I guess I must not have taken into account the younger statues (particularly since the one people were using as an excuse to brawl in Charlottesville was unveiled in 1924.) More recent statues do complicate matters. And, bearing in mind that I live in a city that has a monument to a literal fascist, and there's no hurry to remove that, I'm not particularly inclined to pulling a 180.

At any rate, I still think it's at least a decent compromise, provided it's done for the less abhorrent figures of history; any statues of (for one example) Jefferson Davis can rot in Hell for all I care. I can't find much in the way of context worth celebrating him for.

You have to view someone like George Washington through the context of the era he lived in. Washington freed all his slaves in his will. While today if someone did that, they'd be a shitbag but for the context of the time he was progressive on all kinds of things. He lived in a time where slavery was pretty much universal across the globe.
The same cannot be said for the southern generals at all. That was in a time where Slavery was on the decline world wide, and had been abolished in many places.

Slavery would never have survived the Industrial Revolution, it was far too inefficient a system to linger. I'm always amused by northern industrialists who railed against the evils of slavery while treating the workers in their fire-trap factories as expendable and infinitely replaceable Irish scum. Being poor in 1860 pretty much sucked. Slave or free.

You want historical significance? Put these statues in a museum ... and provide context for those who are otherwise deaf to it. Why are conservatives so afraid of museums?
I understand what you are saying and it makes sense. Honestly, I personally don't have a strong opinion on these statues either way. I guess the fairest thing to do would be to let the people of the city itself decide. My response was only to say that Neo's opinion on this particular issue with historical statues doesn't make him a supremacist sympathizer, even if it is the same opinion as the supremacist themselves.
Here's something to think about. What if the Confederate statues and monuments had not been ordered for removal? What would have happened in Charlottesville? Or better yet, what wouldn't have happened in Charlottesville? To many Southerners those Confederate monuments are a connection to their ancestry and culture.

And they were a way to remind certain people that they hadn't forgotten anything. The Y-donor was a kluxxer, he went on and on about "keeping the real South alive". But would any of them be good with a 200 foot FSM statue on government property, maintained by tax dollars? I think not.

And many southerners see them as symbolic of slavery and Jim Crowism. What you are really chafed about is that those are the people who have the upper hand. The city council passed the resolution directing the statues be moved. There were no riots by aggrieved southern heritage phonies until Richard Spencer and your nazi pals started weighing in. THEY are the outside agitators.
