Especially given the whole book is full of symbols (The Garden, The Serpent, Tower of Babel, etc). This sort of symbolism is also present in books such as Daniel and Revelation. Some Christians interpret Genesis symbolically rather than literally because recognize the symbolism which is throughout Genesis. Well that is my $0.02
