Welcome.

Question, based on your handle: How do you feel about Jay Jay Abrams destroying Vulcan in his new series of films?

Whatever happens in the alternate timeline STAYS in the alternate timeline.

I suppose one could view it as a metaphor for Abrams' take on Star Trek. It has always been a fairly cerebral show. Destroying Vulcan may symbolize the destruction of the cerebral side of things in favor of action sequences and explosions.

Good answer.

I've seen two of Abram's "Trek" disasters.

Both were bad, as far as I'm concerned (I haven't seen Into Darkness).

Sometimes we get some very involved philosophy threads going. That stuff often goes over my head though.

You know, some of Western Philosophy is highly abstract which creates a learning/comprehension curve. But the fact is, much of the time the concepts are fairly simple. The real hurdle to overcome is getting your head into that space where you're dealing with pure ideas.

On the other hand, there is a lot of philosophy which isn't abstracted too much: Henry David Thoreau and Friedrich Nietzsche are pretty good reads, even if philosophy isn't your thing. Camus too!

If you ever have trouble following a subject, try asking for some clarification. I've never known a philosopher who was anti-question.

Welcome Vulcan, show me your ears. I've read the complete works of Paul Tillich. And I'm a massive liar.

Maybe I should put a Vulcan ear on my avatar, but I suck at computers.

My name is Dillon. I am a philosophy student with dreams of poverty. I've been an atheist for years now. I love debate. I also am a huge fan of Philosophy of Religion (even the stuff that presumes theism); pretty much all philosophy interests me. Any Plato enthusiasts in the house? Anyway, I hope to have some good discussions while I'm here.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Peace.

I remember learning Plato's allegory of the cave at school. Back then I had no idea what was going on and it just bored me to tears. It was only much later in life that I understood what Plato meant and these days I often find myself relating the story in discussions. I plan to one day read Plato's Republic but I have other books lined up to read before I get to that. One day...
