That fits your god as much as any fallen angel. Many people are willing to submit to those who they believe have their best interests at heart. Your god doesn't have other people interests at heart at all. Least of all thinking of other people as equal to, or before, himself. See it's a sign of a good relationship when person A puts person B above himself, and person B puts person A above himself. Someone who rules from on high, dictating laws, and harming people who break these laws, without doing much to improve society, is not useful to society.

I can only assume he is lazy and uncaring. Either that, or my teachers were wrong about god desiring that everyone get into heaven. He may be content to just take whoever is willing, and cast aside the rest.

Good point, and this is precisely why there is one. Many whine about it as if God is unjust, yet they won't complain if the mass murderer who lives next door gets thrown in prison. Of course, it's all about being "humane" and all, only the really scary part is that they get handed over to the most evil "jailor" in all of creation. But not without warning, and his day is coming as well.
But yes, it was intended to be a deterrent, and yet many still insist on taking the teeth out of it, as if they think they are doing God a favor.
