That's very true but it applies to troops in all countries. They obey and are loyal because they have been brainwashed into that mental state. That's where religion comes in. The average troop has absolutely no reason to go charging off to war other than his "God" (national leader, family, friends, self-delusion, etc.) tells him to do so. People hate draft dodgers because they don't buy into that BS.

..and you;re basing your appraisal of why "the average troop" does what he does based upon your own considerable experience?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

What do you suggest as the reason soldiers go charging off to distant lands to possibly get injured or killed by people they have had no contact with? Stupidty might top the list but what do you say?

Money
A sense that they are protecting their family and their home
A legit sense they are helping the world
Personnel values
Much the same reason anyone does anything

You never heard of WWII, I take it. Too be fair he never said every war America fought was for nothing only that America specializes in sending troops to die in war that are really for nothing .
