D. By revealing their existence to the amoral madman they are playing Russian roulette, pun intended, with all of us.

The while thing feels like a really badly written intrigue novel. Reality is stranger than fiction indeed.

You can indulge your cheap and selective skepticism if you wish, but when the Times takes such an extraordinary step as to publish this piece and publicly states that the author, known to them, is a senior-level administration official, I doubt they got it wrong.

They know who it is. Problem is that they ambiguously said "senior level." Is that cabinet level? One step down? Three steps down? Have any of us heard of this person? There are so many layers to Washington bureaucracy that "senior" doesn't tell us much.
