Political Correctness
It's interesting to see this become such a big political topic again. This is a rather broad topic but in general are your more in favor or against political correctness?

RE: Political Correctness
In general, I'm in favor of it.

If it isn't taken to the extreme it's just common courtesy in my opinion.

RE: Political Correctness
Taken to "the extreme" it's still just "extreme courtesy".
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Or it just becomes the same old bigoted attitudes, except this time, they favor the historically oppressed at the expense of those who were previously of the oppressor class. That said, at least that sort of left-wing extremism is nowhere near mainstream (outside of social media hiveminds, anyway.)

“The oppressed look up to their oppressors, and cannot wait to follow their examples.” -William S. Burroughs.

I prefer to look at things on a case-by case basis to see what’s actually workable. That said, most of the time, I tend to agree with the “Politically Correct” crowd, although if they’re advocating something counterproductive, I won’t hesitate to point that out.

It may be common courtesy, but my study of human history suggests that “Common Courtesy” is not all that common, especially when you try extend it to EVERYONE. It may not even be that natural. It was only fairly recently that nations even decided making the desires of its people a priority was a good idea. And for most of that time, we’ve struggled with the prospect of letting women and political minorities in on the act. And that’s still a problem. And I can’t be sure that putting a courteous facade will actually help change things all that much. Remember the days when racism was pretty much universally considered socially unacceptable? Didn’t stop Trump from rising to power on a campaign based solely on Faerie Dust and blatant racism.

Why, yes, that does suck.

I don't want to have to be extremely courteous to people though. Imagine you are working as a waiter. That's a job where you have to be extremely courteous to people . Now imagine having to interact like that all the time.

Sounds shitty to me.

You do have to interact like that anytime your job is on the line.  Cmon, how hard is it to not call people niggers, lol. Maybe it sounds shitty to you...but the converse sounds shittier to others.

If you bumble into your bosses office and call him a black son of a bitch...expect those walking papers..ditto for your employee when your boss hears about it, nowadays..but that's PC. Maybe just call him Jake......right?

The pc issue is a manufactured controversy. Has been since the 90's...and it's suddenly the 90's again, somehow.

(you're talking to the wrong person about the inconvenience of extreme courtesy, btw..grew up in florida..member....being nice to people we hate is the fabric of the universe)

RE: Political Correctness
I would not consider gratuitously insulting people over aspects of themselves they cannot change to be an extreme case. A depressingly large percentage of people may think that, but I don’t.

What I would consider to be taking it too far, given your black boss example is saying that, because that boss is black, ANY criticism of that boss is racist, even if said complaints have bugger-all to actually do with race.

RE: Political Correctness
I voted “No”. Not because I don’t care for being courteous, but because I don’t care for compulsory/unduly-expected courtesy. Not that I anticipate any legally binding political correctness, but I despise the PC mob that you see in the shitty corners of social media.

For example, the gang up on porn star August Ames for what seemed to be a -while it was an unwisely worded message- Twitter post about her personal choice on who she has sex with in the industry. She committed suicide shortly after the enormous amount of PC bullying.

A cursory glance at some of my post history will show that I’ve got some anti-PC views, some stronger than others. Some of those hold true today and some don’t. I like to take it on more of a case by case basis these days, but with age comes experience and (hopefully) some wisdom.

Political Correctness is about more than just not dropping N-bombs. If it were just that, then basically everyone is succeeding at being politically correct already.

That's a bait and switch. Esspecially since you referenced extreme political correctness. Perhaps we should back up the conversation though. What do you consider ''mild political correctness" and what do you consider "extreme political correctness"

I'll give you my examples. I consider mild political correctness not dropping racial slurs or saying sexiest jokes etc.

I consider extreme political correctness to be something like an office environment, where you have to be on your best behavior. You force yourself to get along with people and don't tell fat jokes behind the back of your fat annoying co-worker, even though they are annoying, etc.

Now example b is fine for working in an office, but not how I definitely don't want to live my entire life that way, with office rules. That sounds terrible.

-and?  You think that extreme pc is not being allowed to be a dick on somebody else's dime..at your place of work?  That's what bothers you? Cry me a river.  Wink

PC doesnt really have much to do with what you say in private, now does it? Just bank up all the fat jokes for sally and tell them to the mirror when you get home.

Pc means I cant tell fat jokes at work without someone calling me an asshole! Jesus christ you snowflake, will you survive? lol.
