Why some people who dislike horror call it stupid?
February 28, 2019 at 9:43 am
I don't know if you personally met someone who is like that, but I did.
As a horror fan myself I have nothing against people who dislike this genre. I'm not going to show horror to someone who dislikes it.
But why do said persons call it stupid? Do they think that the people who like horror are stupid, because they try to get scared, which is a negative feeling?

It's how people are. No need to be offended.

I didn't say I was offended. I wanted to hear what others think about this matter.
I do have an opinion to why some people think like that. As I mentioned in the OP, it might be because fright is a negative emotion and they think that the ones who want to get that feeling may be stupid, or at least this thing in particular is stupid.
I also believe that some of them might have troubles with new things and people who are different, on what level it depends.
Another reason could be a bad first impression. Maybe they saw horror that was actually stupid and assumed that all horror is like that.
I find it inreseting to read other peoples' posts. Maybe I learn something new or they express a certain information in an interesting way.

I've used phrases like, 'stupid horror film' or 'silly horror movie'. I just don't like them very much. They bore me. I think that I don't like them for the same reason that I don't like movies that have intense special effects with weak plots, such as that Infinity War movie that everyone has raved about. The suspense generally makes me yawn, and the gory special effects are like, "Meh". To me they are all like Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang meets a psychotic mass murderer, and it doesn't go well for the gang. The psychotic mass murderer would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for that one kid.

So much of the horror genre is overt sadism.

Depends what you mean by "horror".
Horror is kind of an umbrella genre, like 'comedy' or 'drama'.
If it's a hack n slash type, I've never cared for those much. I don't like gory violence that's shown just for the sake of being gory and violent. Not saying those things don't have uses, you just have to know when and where. It's not as bad when the movie knows it's kind of schlocky and plays off of that, but when it takes itself too seriously.... no thanks.
Monster movies? Too many today don't even try to hide the CGI that's used to generate the monster. And the "big reveal" is usually said monster slowly rising up, facing the camera, then letting out a big roar really close to the camera. I'm sorry, as good as CGI is getting, when you're that close to the monster, it looks like it walked right out of a video game.
I'd say I go more for the psychological horrors and terrors. The less I see and know, the more likely I am to actually be scared.

Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.
And this tends to apply to horror films in particular because, well, there's a lot of them being made, they're really popular, and, as far as films go, they're actually fairly easy (and inexpensive) to make. Naturally, with this trifecta, there's no doubt loads of hacks making mediocre product, and, as a result, the market gets flooded with shit and people don't really know that much about which ones are good or not. And when a lot of crap films become popular, it taints public perception of the whole genre. For every Hereditary, It, or Get Out, there's loads of movies like The Apparition, The Devil Inside. The Disappointments Room, Fear Dot Com, I Know Who Killed Me, One Missed Call, or Shut In (all future entries in the Deep Hurting Project, provided my local library doesn't remove them from circulation before I get them) and even more movies that don't even have the courtesy of being spectacularly horrible and are simply mediocre films with nothing to recommend them for, except maybe appealing to idiots who don't know any better. And when people don't take care to separate the wheat from the chaff, we get idiots who think that it's crap all the way down.
Of course, the fact that they've been falling into formulas for decades (seriously, Scream codified the template for the cliches of the modern horror film, and 23 years after it was released, they're still falling back on those cliches) does not help matters.

My point Atheistin, people can be quite harsh in their outlook on things they don't like. Personally, I think golf a complete waste of time and the dumbest game in existence. I hold no ill will towards those that like the game.

People have different tastes.
Some people like slasher-type "horror" movies.
I don't. I like a horror movie with suspense and chills. One that I can watch in a dark room by myself that will scare me (I'm not easily scared).
