My Neighbor Won’t Leash His Dog

My Neighbor Won’t Leash His Dog
He has a German Shepherd. I asked to make sure his dog doesn’t approach mine when I’m walking her leashed and he just flat out said no. He said if they get in a fight it’s my fault because his dog is friendly. I called animal control but the interaction left me terribly upset. Now I’m walking my dog carrying a metal rod. My dog is old and blind and a little mutt like 15 lbs. I’ve had her for over ten years and I got her as a rescue. Cliche or not she’s the most important “person” in my life. I can’t believe I can’t just enjoy walking around the block in peace. Now I’m angry, scared, upset... just everything negative. It’s even frightening to be this angry. If my dog was attacked and hurt or killed I’d probably end up in prison myself and I’m just a tired old man. I swear. People piss me the fuck off. I’m sure some of you don’t understand why you need to leash your dogs and other people really feel where I’m coming from. Unless you’re in a designated no leash zone please please please leash your dog for everyone’s safety including you and your dog.

Some people are pieces of shit.

Don’t upset yourself too much. Just make sure animal control follows up and make it known to your neighbours that there will be consequences if this animal attacks.

I have a cat that follows me down my driveway, which I share with several other houses. At the far end of the driveway are public access steps to the road above.

I returned from a quick trip to the shops to overhear a couple of kids saying “hey, let’s see if we can kick the cat.”

I told them that if they tried to hurt my cat, I’d hurt them.

They told their father some of what I’d said and when he confronted me I told him exactly what had been said.

I could hear him yelling at his kids from my place.

And I got an apology.

Don’t be intimidated.

Have you tried talking to the dog? They can be very reasonable after you've given them a treat.

I thought of that. What I’m so scared of though is the dog runs over and my blind old senile bitch snips at him and then gets herself killed. She was always a very gentle dog but now she just doesn’t always know what’s going on. I can pick her up but his dog is so fast. I just don’t know.

And above: I can’t believe they were openly talking about hurting your cat. That’s terrible. Thank goodness the father was reasonable. In this day and age man (or sister) you just never know about kid’s parents.

What about the animal control interaction left you upset? Do you have documentation of his dog off leash and approaching you? Without it there is little they can do.

We have problems with loose dogs all of the time. The wife and I both carry protection when either of us walk them. "My dog is friendly" is the response of a stupid/ignorant owner. And if there is a fight it will be considered his dog's fault because his dog was not under his control, leash law or not (our local law).

The easiest solution might be to take a drive to a safe place to walk. Pain in the ass but eliminates the conflict. Bonus is that it gives your dog new things to sniff.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

When I was a kid, we let our dogs run around, and do whatever. My parents didn't build a fend, or keep the dogs on a rope in the yard. In retrospect, I think it would have solved a lot of problems if they were kept contained or supervised when outside. Much like Human children....I wish your dog the best in her golden years.

@brewer

animal control was fine / yeah I got to get it on film —- I can’t take them to dog park every time they need a piss - it seems like from his attitude that it’s only a matter of time before it happens again and unless I freeze up in panic and fear I’m going to resort to blunt force trauma —- I know it sounds shitty and makes me much less sympathetic and I adore dogs and abhore violence but I do not have a better idea.

Sorry for not taking this thread seriously ... but it doesn't have the [Serious] tag and that, apparently, means I don't have to?

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
