RE: Random Thoughts
it's just another quad copter.

You would still need a rotary endorsement to fly it.

Your driver's license isn't gonna do...

Unless they change the laws, of course. Or maybe these things would be assigned as different category than regular helicopters.

Another thing I’ve wondered about - would you need a driving license for a self-driving car?

My expectation would be that a license would be required until such time as a completely autonomous vehicle is considered safe "enough". While that personal air car is intriguing, I wouldn't want to be anywhere they are flown. People have enough trouble with two dimensions.

Naturally, it would be contingent on the autocars being at least as safe as human-operated cars are now. But if a car is fully automated, you wouldn’t be a driver, you’d be a passenger. Passengers aren’t required to hold driving licenses.

I would imagine that personal air cars wouldn’t become commonplace until some sort of automated ground system is worked out, which could then be adapted to air travel.

Yeah, I can still remember that time Volvo tried to demonstrate a self-driving car and it immediately ran over two journalists there to cover the event.

And to make matters worse, it turned out that pedestrian detection was not only not standard, it was a premium feature. And they didn’t even bother to install it. I know the case was over 5 years ago, but I Still can’t expect the manufacturers to pull it off properly.

Over 100 people in the US die every day from vehicle deaths every day - on the ground --- and you want to launch these morons into the atmosphere???

I imagine that self driving cars are going to be like conversational tables where people will sit face to face and the cars will go so fast that no windows would be available to ensure a comfortable ride for the passengers. If that is the case then no license would be necessary, much like rail or bus travel. I would imagine there would be some other options of sleeper cars too for long drives across the country. Maybe even self driving boats to get across the oceans. This would be an easier prospect because there are usually manned tugs at ports that could facilitate docking.

You should read the things I write before you respond to them. I just said that travel could be made safer.

No.

It wouldn't.

The technology is not anywhere near a level needed to do so.
