NRA, too many hands in the cookie jar?
NRA says it's aware of 'significant diversion of its assets' in tax filing.

Short answer, they were looting the organization.

IRS needs to review and possibly yank thier tax-exempt status. I say this as a former life member. They've been corrupt for decades.

What sort of checks and balances could be instituted in the NRA to prevent future corruption?

I m not surprised. Been hearing for years (from news sources) that some NRA members have been feeling distanced from the organization's leadership.
