Preppers

RE: Preppers
people will pull together only if the prevailing perception is while there may evidently be danger, the danger to themself is not imminent nor very high.

If it is perceived that danger can be imminent or quite high, i think any large group will quickly split into those who will kill to enhance a self perception of control over the situation they face, or at least reflectively undertake actions which in their perception shifts their own risk into other to create a sense of control, and those who prefer to band together to create a sense of making progress towards controlling the situation.   the current pandemic suggest the breakdown will likely be much closer to 50/50 than many people might expect.

As to an acual apocalypse, maybe I'm an optimist, but I think most people will pull together to help each other survive, ant and grasshopper alike. Cooperation is the greatest survival skill our species has.

Yup... My neighbor has his generator over at his mother' s. She is infirm and needs the AC to stay comfortable. So he is borrowing my baby generator - a cute little 900 watt unit to run his refridgeration.... It' s just big enough...

I am not understanding why humans can't get a grip on reality. You can hug guns, and hate the existence of government all you want. You can fight and gain power short term, sure, but tell that to the dinosaurs and meteors who don't give one flying fig about your temporary anger.

I don't hate gun owners because guns exist. I hate bad logic. Don't lecture anyone about "cooperation" if your only argument is "more guns".

Ultimately, like it or not, the sun, our star, the center of our solar system, has a life span, a time constraint. It is not cognitive, it didn't care 4 billion years ago, and it does not care now. It just does, it is merely a mater of physics and chemistry. If humans truly want to value life, the first thing and most important thing to do is to understand WE ARE NOT SPECIAL. If anything, we are an invasive species, and are becoming a victim of our own success. It isn't to say I don't value modern technology. I DO. Certainly I value typing what you are reading right now on a computer rather than using old ink and pen and having it delivered by horse.  But that does not absolve our species from considering pace of consumption. And in my estimation our species is failing miserably in that respect.

Too much of the global economy is based on speed of consumption. If our species is to survive we have to evolve to create ways of slowing things down.

isn’t the bolded part itself indicative of not getting a grip on reality?

A poem featuring Hitler and ABBA most likely.

RE: Preppers
Since we're talking apocalypse and not a local natural disaster or temporary period of inconvenience, I think the decision whether to bug out or remain in place should be a high in planning priority.

This, of course, would depend upon having a pre-planned place to go if on the move, and whether one might expect resistance upon arrival.

If remaining in place, defense and whom in the immediate area can be relied upon for cooperative effort may be concerns, I believe.
