Well, yes.  If it's important to address something when it happens to the president, it should be equally important when the victim is a regular citizen.

Emphasis, of course, is on should be. Given that the party that's stonewalled the issue for decades is shamelessly elitist, though, it's not.

My take is that the president is a much more high profile person who attracts a lot more scrutiny and hatred from the general populace, and with mental cases, maybe even more so. The office of president carries a lot of responsibilities that most people in the rest of the population don't. I don't mean to sound dismissive with this, but replacing a duly elected president isn't as easy as replacing yet another citizen who has none of the president's responsibilities, or experiences. We've been recently subjected to an anomalous case where a president getting shot and killed would have most likely been a positive result for the world.

Given the chump's record on cheating and stiffing contractors, I'm pretty amazed that he's still alive. When I further consider this, I suspect that that comes from some sort of "mafia like" skills (for lack of a better description) that extends into extortion of his "fellow" politicians. Just remember what Chris Christie, for example, looked like, after running against the chump in the 2016 primary, and then was answering phones, fundraising for him. If the chump was actually for the USA instead of only for himself, he'd have been a formidable figure on the world stage. Not saying that that would necessarily have been a good thing, btw.

"We don't punish the insane".

This turd shot a US President - and three others - and because some twat doctor decided his marbles were out of whack - but are all better now --- he gets a pass....

Why?

I say keep the fuck locked up for 3 or 4 lifetimes.....

Do you feel that way because he attempted murder or because it was a president?

I think it's a tricky thing with mentally ill people.  If they are truly mentally ill, they don't belong in a prison cell but perhaps a mental institution, but sometimes it seems like the plea of not guilty by reason of insanity is a bit of a stretch.

There is a huge difference between when someone mentally sane hurts others, and when someone with a natural malady does the same without  realizing what they are doing.

Look at all the damage Hinkley would have prevented had he succeeded. Ordinary people don't have the malevolent influence on their country that Reagan did in the eight years his regime held the White House.

To be fair, Don Trump Jr's still on the loose and I'm sure his criminal portfolio is significantly larger.

Sorry, but this is besides the point. In a civil society, we don't kill others because we don't like them. Hinkley in retrospect may have changed history if he had succeeded. But he wasn't doing it to change political history, he had a hard on for Jodie Foster. Oswald changed history too.
