It is. I only included that anecdote because it was the closest I have had to a personal experience with the matter. To me, the issues are more complex when you're talking about active euthanasia.
To those who are in the position of making the decision - I'm not sure that there is a always a useful distinction to be made. In the end, removing life support had the same result. Given the inevitable outcome of withdrawing life support, I'm not sure that I can make a distinction other in the fact that euthanasia would probably have been faster.

I live in fear of developing arteriosclerosis. (hardening of the arteries) It causes severe dementia. My grandfather had it and I watched my father die by inches over a decade. It was horrible.
It's my plan to leave before I get too bad,via a handful of serapax and the best cognac I can get my hands on. I say 'my plan' , NOT what "I WANT to do". I have no choice; assisted suicide is illegal here.
This issue is one which makes me fucking livid with the sanctimonious cunts who have the fucking nerve to decide FOR me.How fucking dare they! I sincerely hope they die slowly, in agony, hoisted with their own petard.

It is very complicated. You can only really judge if euthanasia is the right way to go when you are directly involved with the scenario.
You are in murky waters when the person in suffering cannot clearly and surely or even slightly indicate their choice.
Indeed Pad, it's down to choice. You don't have the right to tell someone else how to live, so to me, you have no right to tell them how they should die.

THAT is part of my own fear; I really don't know if will have the honesty and courage to kill myself while I'm still capable of choosing.

I am of the opinion that a "Living Will" is the way to go, should I get to the stage of that poor woman!!
Agreed that 'It's MY fucking body and I have the last say' hence a "Living Will" is the best option.... in the transition period...it is a very tough call. Should that woman have a fatal accident whilst wandering about in her confused state is THAT assisted suicide??...Tough call all round.

I have one*,but that does not allow my guardians to quietly smother me,or slip some cyanide into my coffee at the appropriate time. it merely prevents 'heroic measures' to keep me alive.
*I have two legal orders: one for guardianship for when I go gaga and power of attorney. Both require the signatures of both guardians,my brother and my best friend, who is also a lawyer.I have also made my friend sole executor but NOT a beneficiary of my will.

Having watched both of my parents waste away from cancer, I'm all for it.
There aren't many things worse than watching someone you love being robbed of their dignity, and being in so much pain.
"No-one who decides that scientific evidence is not for him and that his own experience or the stories of others is the be all and end all of deciding what's true ever has the right to call people searching for reliable, repeatable evidence narrow-minded. Oh, it's easy.....just go to Texas and buy a pellet gun.

It's called 'Suicide-by-cop' and they seem perfectly willing to help you out.

hock: Whether you want them to or not. That's chilling.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
