Curious about different views on homosexuality
|
I'm not a big fan but certainly do not think that ancient superstitions should be used to deny modern people equal rights under the law.

Actually, the bible doesn't outlaw homosexuality. It arguably says something about male homosexual acts, but it's not entirely clear. The bible says nothing about lesbianism whatsoever. And if you dig into Ancient Near Eastern culture of the time, the concept of a sexual orientation didn't really exist. They understood sexual acts, but not sexual orientation as an identity, aside from the expectation of men to perform the role of head of a family. And it's entirely possible that it was their role as men and husbands which was the issue with homosexual acts, not the sexual desire, as it was more acceptable to engage in male homosexual sex if you were the penetrating partner; if you were the receiving partner, you were abdicating your role as a male and a husband, and accepting the role of the female, emasculating yourself. Not so for the other partner. (And this echoes various sexual roles in Hellenic culture of the time, involving pederastic 'mentors' of young men.) And if you look at the language used to describe male homosexual acts, it was the same language used to describe worshiping other gods — it was the language of adultery and infidelity, the breaking of accepted role norms. There are many factors which influence homophobia, including religion and lack of exposure, but homophobia is very prevalent in male adolescents, and at that stage, it is theorized to involve questions of sexual identity formation and anxiety about sexual roles. So there are a variety of sources for homophobia, not all of them religious. And given that the anxiety about sexual roles is a strong component in male adolescents, and most religious prohibitions focus on male homosexuality, it's entirely plausible that religions might simply inherit the trait from normal processes implicit in male sexual maturation, rather than create it ex nihilo.
I'm bi. Therefore homosexuality obviously disgusts me.
I'm also bi and find both homosexuality and heterosexuality offensive and discriminatory!

huh, say what?
Why is the fact that I find women more sexually attractive than men, discriminatory? RE: Curious about different views on homosexuality

Carl Jung, a contemporary of Freud asserted that humans are simply sexual, with a dominant preference. Of course you have every right of be offended. I'm not offended (neither is my gay sis) as long as the terms are used simply a description. I think we have a very long way to go before society as a whole sees a person's sexuality as irrelevant..
I'm confused. If homosexuality is prevalent among adolescent boys, are we saying that a lot of kids are gay but then grow out of it? I only ask because it would seem that every homosexual adolescent goes on to become a homosexual adult. At least, I would think most of them do.
I've always been both saddened and amused by peoples constant attention to something, which in the main takes up such a tiny fraction of our lives.
On average sex occupies about 1% of our daily lives (the physical act anyway). Yet over the years there has been so much hate, angst and bitterness about who people choose to spend that time with. And this isn't just about gay sex, it's about inter-religious and interracial relationships as well. When this is no longer an issue we will have taken a major step in our evolution. If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71. |
