The confession thread
RE: The confession thread
Also, I'm quite fine with reading overtly Christian fantasy novels like Narnia and even enjoying them immensely.

Please also see His Dark Materials

Brilliant fantasy series by an overt atheist. The movie fucked it up - ignore that.

I would also argue that Harry Potter really doesn't touch on religion at all.

Technically, yes, but practically, atheists on this board tend to be naturalists or something close to it, so I wouldn't expect them to think of a book with magic in it as an atheist book.

Well on the other hand, would they call Harry Potter a theist book?

No. Aside from something blatant like Narnia, a fantasy novel generally isn't considered theist or atheist. Heck, the Conan books had gods in them, but I've never heard of anyone refer to them as theist fantasy. Or theist swords and sorcery if you wanna go to sub-genres.

Just remember that it comes with a price, dearie.

I loved "The silence of the lambs", not talking about the famous movie, but the novel by Thomas Harris and that is a confession because I usualy dont like to read thrillers. I saw the movie before, but the detail of charracter and the way the story was told was simply more epic in the novel.
I also read "Der Untergang" (The Downfall) before watching the film (which has the same name) and found the novel better than the film. Just like I read "Der Vorleser" (the Reader) before watching the film and finding the film shit yet the novel amazing. I guess in most cases the novel on which a film is based is better than the film.

I dont like Stephen King, dont know why, just couldnt get into it.
The only Stephen King novel I enjoyed was "Pet Sematary" of which I havent seen the movie. And I saw the movie "misery" which I think is epic.

I dont like to read fantasy, why I dont know. Or maybe I do.
I cant stand novels which take 2 pages to describe a hall of a palace.

I read Cell and found it enjoyable if not ground breaking. I then tried the Dark Tower books (I believe there are seven in all). I really liked it at first but quit partway into the third. The legless multiple-personality character just didn't work for me. Too bad because I did like the gunslinger and the addict characters.

I really enjoyed The Stand by Stephen King (despite the use of good vs. evil)
