Unaccepting Parents

Unaccepting Parents
I've tried over and over to point out contradictions in the bible and in religion itself to my parents, and all they do is yell. They tell me I'm hurting them and they know I don't believe and everyone else at my church does, and that i'll go to hell. I really try to do as much as possible to be calm and nice, but they never are. They're intoletable and mean about it. They refuse to let me not partake in church services and activities. It's black and whitebto them. They're so close-minded. And they yell at me for being too dramatic, rude, and close-minded. It's so damn contradictory.

You seem young. Go along with it until you're able to understand more about the religion and how it's wrong and you're of an age where you can look after yourself outside of your parents' housing.
What you're doing will only cause you more problems. If you're hurting them, you should stop... That's not a very nice way to go about it and it will only give them more anti-atheist fuel. Just as you would hope they would stop if they were hurting you through their actions.

Hate to say this, but you live under their roof. I really would not make it too much of an issue with them while you are living with them. Your best bet is to while being yourself, SHOW them in demonstration through your actions by helping them around the house. Stay in school and get the best grades you can. Long term as long as they know you are doing your best, they may never understand, but with time it wont be so scary to them.

This reminds me of a point I should make.

If you make it a big deal: anything that goes wrong or badly will be blamed on your atheism.

Just listen to what your parents say. Try and understand why they think the things they do.

Well you're here now, so why not - instead of arguing with your parents over something that is important to them - bring up your concerns here, point out the contradictions that you feel invalidate the Bible and I and the other Xians here will be happy to respond to you.

You see, things are not always contradictory just because they don't make complete sense. A contradiction is where two sources say two different things that are incompatible with each other - not when they say two things that are merely different to each other. There's a big difference I assure you.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

Not only Xians. I will, too! I'll play Jesus' advocate, if you will.

Best idea yet: don't tell your parents anything until you're out of the house, and well outside of their power. This way: you can enjoy yourself just that much more for a few years Smile
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

RE: Unaccepting Parents
First lesson in atheism:

Don't go looking to 'convert' others unless they come to you with complaints.

You didn't specify whether you started these discussions or if they did. Are they forcing you to go to church? Preaching to you? Making you participate in prayers before dinner?

Or are you coming to them unasked and just telling them their beliefs are wrong?
