I can't wait for the conservatives to jump on this and claim that scientists think that ancient man created global warming, or else use this to claim that global warming is normal and natural.

Right.
The whole debate over whether or not climate change is anthropogenic or not is a huge distraction from the real issues: climate change does and WILL happen, whether we are the cause or not. What should we, and what will we do about it?

Why didn't other, more drastic climate changes that happened repeatedly in the last 3 million years do in the mammoth? The climate change from 30,000 years to 5,000 years ago, when the last known population of mammoth died out, is actually neither very extreme nor very volatile by the standards of last 3 million years. Mommoth survived each of those othe more serious climate changes.
The answer can't be so simple as "climate change did them in". Other, non-climate related factors had to have converged to help a great deal.

I think that our most (only?) realistic option is to adapt. Otherwise we join the millions of other species that no longer exist. I'll be content to know that I live on as trace genetic material in whatever the next dominant species is. Intelligent humanoids with working gills? I MADE THAT!!!
