I don't think they're right.

Therefore I am an an atheist.

End of.

I imagine that would entail

"I have good reasons to think they aren't right."

Just shows how bad it is.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Those are words I never thought I'd hear.

The fact that it's not a concept taken seriously in academia (not even in science, IMHO) suggests that it's less of a legitimate intellectual factor and more of a debating trick, where people are constantly trying to foist burden of proof on each other instead of having a discussion.

It's not a "trick" it's a debate term. If someone claims something is true, asking for evidence is not a trick. It's a logical question.

Religion makes a lot of demands on humanity. People kill each other, condemn each other, horribly alter a lot of shit.

Hell, if my academic background is as important as that I'll happily scan my diploma. I think it would be idiotic not to demand at least that much.

Talk is cheap, son. If you believe in a god provide evidence to back the belief or GTFO.

Asking for evidence is fine.

Maintaining the existence of a certain threshold called a "burden of proof", determining where that threshold lies, and whether or not the evidence someone provides amounts to that threshold is something else altogether.

I am. So are a lot of people on this forum.

I'll gladly have that discussion with intelligent people.

Which is why I'm disinterested in having the discussion with like 99% of people in this thread, while I gladly spend an hour or so looking at MindForgedManacle's argument in the other thread and writing up two substantial responses to both his arguments.
