Chuck, I think you're wrong. I don't know a single lady that would keep an engagement ring if the engagement was called off. Unless the guy cheated and/or called it off for being in love with someone else--in which case, consider that ring time served.
Furthermore, I could literally get a cracker Jack box ring for an engagement ring and I'd. be happy. Its not the ring that's important.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

The etiquette is, if HE breaks the engagement, she keeps the ring. If SHE breaks the engagement, she returns the ring.
My late husband and I jointly paid for our rings, including the engagement ring.

That was the ring she lost. That was also the reason I almost had a stroke for not yelling at her for two weeks...
I knew she felt bad enough for losing it, so there was no need to say anything.
