Very true. Radio communications are (mostly) restricted to line of sight (particularly VHF and UHF). Yeah, it's possible to bounce LF/VLF/ULF signals off of the ionosphere, but it is NOT reliable and aviation doesn't use *LF for good reason.

Absent a satellite uplink or some kind of repeater system, transoceanic flights will have significant periods of communications blackout. Whether that applies in this particular case, I have no idea.

Wrong. Aircraft still use HF which easily bounces off the ionosphere. However, satellite communications will probably completely take over all HF communications, with perhaps HF as a backup.
