Christians frequently have a thirst for knowledge, but this thirst rarely extends beyond attempting to find reasons to justify a belief you'll hold even though you can't honestly justify it.
Totally wrong.

Been a few months now and so far I got zero payoff. Squat. Diddly. I preferred my comfortable lie to this ugly truth, but having unplugged, I now can't plug myself back in or unthink what I thought.
I can't even have fun debating with christians because I would not want them to lose what I lost!
I think I'm going through the kuber Ross model for Yahweh and I'm stuck on anger.
I guess it must be different for everyone depending on their experience with religion. Becoming an atheist had a huge pay off for me. I still get what you mean though. Sometimes you think how much easier life could have been if you would have never doubted in the first place. What is it that you really miss about being religious?
*hugs*

Jacob needs hugs, you're right Losty Hugs help evVerything
I feel a little taste of freedom and real hope and I love it.
I worry less about this:
And more about this:
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.
Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.
Quote:Some people deserve hell.
I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

Welcome back Jacob. I missed you on the forum because your comments were usually reasonable and respectful, even if you didn't agree. Let me suggest that part of your problem is that you're looking for the point of view that causes you to receive the most benefits rather that what is the truth. Christianity isn't about what benefits you can get from it, but is about believing in and following God. We do reap benefits, but we also suffer along the way. Life is tough here and there's no escape from it. I struggle, but I receive comfort from knowing the truth and serving someone greater than myself and I look forward to something much better. Neither atheism, christianity or any other belief is going to make this world a playground. It seems apparent that your search may not be over and I do wish you the best. Stop right there criminal scum! You have violated the law. Pay the court a fine or serve your sentence.

So sorry to hear that, Jacob. And you were the best xtian I ever met. Are you sure you can't wrap your head around an on-board other that is greater than you in some ways? I know, you still lose the eternity perspective. You also lose the ever present, totally mega-omni other as a prayer/conversation partner. Both of those are real losses for sure. Certainly atheism offers nothing close to adequate compensation.
But the truth is we don't really know just how far short of the xtian god our on-board, wiser other may fall. Certainly there are no super powers. But in terms of wisdom and insight it isn't a total loss. I really believe there is more to us than what is under our conscious control .. and I like that. (Back off skeptics! I have a key board and I'm not afraid to use it.)

Zero payoff? How about no fear of hell? No guilt. Atheism is a partial enabler for me being able to live an awesome lifestyle. Plus Atheist girls are awesome.
