Objectifying women
#31
RE: Objectifying women
Holy shit!

Anyway, in regards to Dotard's initial point, I agree, to an extent. A stripper objectifies herself. A prostitute, swimsuit model, pornstar, etc., objectifies herself. A child in a beauty pageant does not. My point is that if you have it and flaunt it, you are objectifying yourself. I have no objections to this. If you are ten and your crazy mom makes you do it, crazy mom is objectifying her child. I know, slightly off the original point, but I thought it pertinent to point out that not all people who participate are capable of making the choice for themself.

I'm going to ignore the rest of this thread because I have had this argument before and I never walk away comfortable. I will say this, though, men that think that woman can justifiably be raped because of their clothing are the reason why I dress the way I do.

RE: Objectifying women
cool post. I agree with everything you said. I would even go so far as to say that prostitution should be legal. Women should have the right to consensual sex for money. I wonder how legalizing prostitution would affect economy. I think women should wear what they want and not have to worry about getting raped.

@ Synackaon I can't believe you wrote all of that, but thanks for shedding new light on this discussion. If we actually put the 'rape because of clothing preference' on trial, there is a chance the jury will find the defendant's argument to 'suggestive, provocative clothing' appealing; not enough to let the defendant go, but enough to weaken the verdict. I guess women need to sign in on laws that protect them from this faulty justification of rape. When I say 'protect' i also mean that the laws would ensure that there is no justification for rape. debate debate.

*rolls eyes*

The ironic laugh here comes when you realize that 'one of us' are usually the ones known for the sexism.

None of us here have ever said such a thing. There is a big difference between saying that the way a woman dressed might be a factor in why she was raped, and saying that because she dressed in revealing clothes, she is partly to blame for what happened, and therefore the crime is "justified" or she somehow deserved it.

Nobody deserves rape. Period. Rape is never justified. Period.

I'm aware of that, Adrian. I didn't mean to imply that anybody said that. However, none of you can argue that there aren't men who feel that way. Well, you could argue it, but you would be wrong.

There are people who have said that a woman is partly to blame if she dresses scantily and gets raped, though. I am pretty sure I read the thread correctly. Of course, they didn't say anything stupid like she deserved to get raped or that it was justified.

There it is. . .

Quote:Therefore partial blame can and should be placed upon the idiot waving $100 bills around.

Being an analogy explaining his position, I think it speaks clearly on what his position is. Partial blame. He could mean 1% for all I know, but there you have it.

RE: Objectifying women
Yes, and I'd agree that in some cases partial blame is correct. The disagreement with your statement is that you extended it to "justifiable" when nobody here had said that. The analogy is a good one

You shouldn't walk around with money hanging out of your pockets; you'll attract thieves. You shouldn't shout racist slurs in a majority ethnic area; you'll attract attacks. You shouldn't dress in a suggestive way if you are planning to walk home alone; you'll attract rapists.

When two of my closest friends (both girls) come over for the evening, I always walk them back, even though it's a 5 minute walk. I wouldn't expect a rational and clear-headed person to walk home alone, especially if they have had a night out and are drunk. There are certain actions that are more likely to get you raped; and if you ignore common sense and act like an idiot, you are partially to blame.
