I don't think you do. AFAIK, those are all vanilla units. Some of the uniques are in G&K, perhaps. (I do have the G&K expansion but the base naval melee units have been part of every civ release since civ 1).

Well I know the privateer was added with G&K, honestly I find it really strange that I would miss something so important. I'm pretty sure the game doesn't even tell you that you can take cities with ships.

It may have assumed we'd figure it out since there are apparently melee ships. I just haven't dine much ship to land or city combat since I usually go for pangaea maps.

I usually go for Biblical maps. Max tech is Ancient era, raging barbarians on, and no win cons besides domination victory.

There are win conditions besides domination? Oh yeah, I turned them all off. Big Grin

I don't know if I have biblical maps. I haven't done max tech, but I usually start in classical. I like raging barbarians, and I usually only take time victory off. With no wins except domination, I guess you like to go with Japan, Aztecs, or some other military oriented faction?

I guess if I was going to stop at classical, since that gives us horsemen, swordsmen, and siege weapons, I'd choose Greece or Rome. Hoplites are barely weaker than swordsmen, and can hold positions that the companion cavalry take. And of course in classical age Rome is like a mighty glacier with legions and ballistae.

Rome if honestly my favorite faction. You can claim any victory, depending on what buildings you choose to go with.

(was just making a joke about the barbaric and technically stunted nature of the Bible Tongue)

But seriously. Venice master race.

Oh. :p

I just have vanilla, so no Venice. Closest I have is Arabia, which is big on gold and can use deserts better than other civs, but as long as I remember to put down trade stations, and research currency, I do well enough on money.

I may get the BNW expansion next time I'm game shopping.
