Lets see..

Atheist - A person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods

Religious - Relating to or believing in a religion

Religion - The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods

Yeah... That totally checks out..

Yes you can. Being an atheist just means you don't believe in gods. If it's coherent or not, that's another question, but it could happen.

Atheism is a specialised subset of scepticism, keyed to one topic only - the existence of gods. Everything else is up for grabs as far as atheism goes; and no other determination can be drawn from identifying with such. To that end, you will find atheists who believe in ghosts, UFOs, the antivax movement, that NASA and Kubrick staged the Moon landings, etc etc etc...

As long as the god hypothesis isn't the issue, atheism isn't a factor.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

And you make such a claim based on?….

Perhaps I'm being optimistic, but hopefully Polaris is basing it on the fact that there are atheists who are members of a religion. A goodly number of Unitarian Universalists and 'bare-bones' Buddhists are atheists. Raellianism is a whacky religion, but it's an atheistic whacky religion.

Initially I would think being religious is the one thing an atheist can't be, but I guess it really depends on what you consider religious.

And since that's the only definition for religion out there, bonus points! Oh, wait:

"A religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence."

Of course you can be atheist and religious. What about Buddhism, Taoism, and LaVeyan (atheistic) Satanism?

People always tell me they aren't really religions.

Well whether or not they're religions is probably subjective, but they seem pretty religious to me and certainly superstitious. Also, you can be religious about something that isn't a religion. You can have a religious devotion to something that isn't a god.
