I'm nearly positive it was real. It was a bright light and a terrible smell before everything turned to darkness. That was the whole thing so maybe it doesn't count.
I later learned that I was on a hospital bed at the time with one of those crazy bright lights over me and a nurse was holding one of those smelling things that's supposed to wake you if you've fainted right in front of my nose.

Or does that make it not real.....? Thinking

Makes it a dream... pulling in elements from your senses.
Have you never had some noise from the outside wake you up, but just before, it's like that noise is in your dream... something in your dream is making the noise?

Yes, but I don't think this was a dream really. I think all the blood was draining from my body, my heartbeat was slowing to a near stop, and right before my body started to die I looked up and literally saw the hospital light and smelled the smelly stuff. I think it only felt like a dream because of the surrounding circumstances. It only seemed like some mysterious thing because my brain wasn't functioning properly at the time and my perception was all fucked up.

Draining pouring spilling. Whatever you call it, it was soaking through the sheets and then pouring onto the floor.

That may be all that it is. It seems that our brains work very, very hard to make sense of the information streaming into it. If we are disoriented for any reason, the brain apparently goes into overdrive to try and make sense of the discordant data suddenly flooding it, even if it means dumping us into a dream-like state where anything goes... including out-of-body experiences and the whole bright-lights-and-dead-grandparents reunion.

That may seem weird, but I think most of us have had some very vivid dreams where the impossible happens and we treat it nonchalantly. The brain is used to going all science-fiction on us when we're not completely conscious or lucid; NDEs may simply be another dream state.

Well, I had some complications during my pregnancy (including but not limited to being stabbed in the stomach maybe a month or so before going into labor). There was a tear in my uterus. That was slowly leaking blood for an unknown amount of time. It kept tearing more during labor, but no one noticed until I started bleeding. At first the nurse said it was normal but then it got worse. By the time they decided to do an emergency c section I need to push and I couldn't not push and Miss P kind of shot across the table followed by river of blood that just never stopped. By the time they got the table with what looked like torture devices set up I was lying in a pool of my own blood and nurses and my sister were using blankets to soak up blood off of the floor so the doctor wouldn't slip and then everyone was gone. I was all alone. I could hear my heart beating like it was right inside my ears. I could see a bright light and this smell. This infuriatingly awful smell and then blackness. When I woke up I thought I was dead for a few seconds. Being a mom can be so fun.

ok, you lost a lot of blood with that... passed out, dreamed about the last place you were in... woke up. That's what I'd make of it...

Yes, they caught her and she came out a perfect healthy 6 pounds 18 inches long. She's still as lovely as ever 2 years later.
