Ah, the memories. In basic, I learned it was quite possible to fall asleep standing up. Sleep deprivation sucks. I can't decide what was worse, that or all the time I spent in a dog forsaken frozen hole in the ground.

This is why I joined the Air Force ... no field training worth mentioning.

Seriously, shopped all four recruiters. The Marines wanted me to be infantry -- no thanks. The Navy promised me two years on a boat ... and I get seasick. I go to the Army recruiter, a captain. He tells me how I can get to be a warrant officer and fly heloes yadayadayada, but I've got to get going -- catch the bus to make my afternoon class. "Can I talk to you Friday, Captain Bagadonuts?"

"No, I'll be out in the field, on exercises for the next three weeks."

Sitting at the bus stop, in a chilly December rain, thinking that the Army makes even their recruiting officers do field training in this shit ... well, that pretty much made the Air Force the deal.

Sorry for the delay.

I was also in the military at the time and had permission to go away for 10 months to do this thing. I would rather have done boot camp 3x over than redo that thing. That was all in 2005-2006 but I became an atheist earlier this year.

What helped me make the final decision to investigate my faith was when I got into the role of "storyteller" for the kids ministry. I had been active in the church for some time and have always had a heart for kids you could say.

Anyhoo, The script for the first week held some strong language in regards to the legitimacy of the stories being told. Like a line would say "...and this TRUE event haeppend..." all capitalized and bold to really hammer the word "true" home. I couldn't get up there and tell the kids something was true when I wasn't sure if I really believed it myself.

I brought up my doubts to the leadership of the church and was asked to step down from the areas i was helping in (drums, greeting, etc.) At that point I really started seeing what the other side had to say about religion. I started looking at debates on youtube and it all went off from there. Turns out there's this thing called evolution. Spent months actually reading the bible and BAM atheist.

Sorry if this is lengthy, maybe the last couple sentences could'v done.

Man I'm glad I grew up in a country where the reality of evolution isn't up for debate.

Went out with a friend a couple of months ago for a couple of months ago. He said the reference to the snake losing his legs in the bible was the account of evolution. Therefore the writer preceded Darwin by blah blah blah...

It doesn't say, the serpent had feet. In fact, even the oldest images of the snake show it without feet.

Also, there's the epic of Gilgamesh, written before the bible, has a sacred garden with a snake tempting the hero. Look it up some time.

Ugh I remember the classes the first couple of weeks. Just a room full of head bobs really. Before you know it there is a drill sergeant standing over you saying "get up..." ah to be 17 again.

Welcome.

I kinda had the same approach. Had my doubts initially and then read the whole bible, not just the parts we'd been fed.

No, not at all, it's very interesting!
