Mississippi wants Bible as the official state book

Mississippi wants Bible as the official state book

Quote:JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi is the birthplace of William Faulkner, Richard Wright and recent U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey. However, some lawmakers say they want to look beyond the secular literary world and designate the Bible as the state book.

Banghead

Some of the greatest literature of the U.S. was somehow produced in this place, but these ignorant, Bible-thumping politicians want to make the Bible the state's official book. Instead of wasting time on this shit like they do every single legislative session, I'd like to see them address the highest unemployment rate in the nation, lowest household income in the nation, and the laundry list of all the other stuff we're the worst at. But they never address any the state's colossal problems; all they do is pander to a fanatical base of extremists who hate the poor, hate anybody not white and heterosexual, love guns, and love all things related to Christianity.

You do realize they waste time on this because they DON'T want to address those things.

Oh, yes. I'm quite aware. However, I believe they can't address those problems because they're far too dim to know how to fix them. There are precious few MENSA candidates down in Jackson.

We can both agree on that. They don't want to ask for help. Or they know that if they do, some of them will be out of a job.

Quote:Miles says he's not trying to force religion on anyone. He says he sees the bible as a good guide for promoting kindness and compassion.

Quote:"The Bible provides a good role model on how to treat people," Miles said. "They could read in there about love and compassion."

You know. Stoning people to death for adultery, killing unbelievers, the suppression of women and homosexuals and other wonderful examples of the christian spirit.

Really? This is the best book they could think of? It's not even good when taken as pure fiction. There is no way you could possible interpret it in any positive way. And how exactly would this represent Mississipi as a symbol? I didn't know it was written there. The article states there are multiple good works of literature written there. So really, besides the obvious one, is there any good reason for this? And is this truly the most urgent matter that Mississipi just has to attend to?

Note to self. Do not move to the US.

Politicians down here engage in some kind of Christian dick-measuring contest every single year. This fucking place is falling apart and these dolts are wasting time and resources on stuff like this. Last year, they added "In God We Trust" to the state seal.

Guess what? Mississippi still sucked the following day.

Oh. So it's a "whoever does the stupidest thing in the name of god officially has the biggest dick" kind of thing. Can't say I get it.

What is the motivation behind that?

a) In their minds this is the most important issue, because god
b) They really don't want to even consider anything really important, but still have to pretend they're doing something

Either way, that shows someone who is a) crazy or b) irresponsible.
Both disqualify anyone from being a politician.

Maybe next they can adopt the asshole as the official state bird!
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
