You, play whomever's advocate you feel like playing, I'm looking forward to your contributions either way Smile

Thanks Alex Smile It's nice to meet you. I certainly don't feel like playing Devil's Advocate to Christianity at the moment. Your signature says it all (if I'm understanding it correctly): if religious people were willing to follow that bit of text there'd be no need for sites like this... I've never met a Christian willing to hear the whole of any argument before commencing their mockery of it or its author.

It's in the eye of the beholder whether my sig asks you to shut up and listen, or whether it is self deprecating Smile

Just saying goodbye (as soon as I can figure out how to close my account). It's been an interesting few days but I don't think this site is for me and I don't think I will get much out of it. It's more aggressive and angry than I feel comfortable being or reading. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, just that it's not right for me. Many thanks to all the people who have engaged with me and shown me kindness - I wish you all the best Wink

Hi Pandamonium,

Thanks for that and if that's the case I feel a bit silly for having burned my bridges so to speak by leaving a farewell message. Can I take that back Wink?

You'll have to forgive me, I just got freaked out by the site going down the other day and thought it might've been an attempted hack by religious nuts angry at something someone had said (which wouldn't have surprised me based on how 'vocal' the discussions are here Wink) - and therefore wanted to distance myself from it.

I still don't feel comfortable with how vocal the discussions are here but please don't take that to mean I am an apologist for religion. I am not. Religion has caused me nothing but grief in my life. I'm gay you see and that was what made me question my religion in the first place and what ultimately continues to drive a pointless wedge between me and my family that no matter what I do, no matter what rational arguments I put forward, I can't dislodge. So believe me I am angry with religion and immensely frustrated but I just don't know how to combat something which has as its first instinct the desire to shut out anything which threatens it.

So since I can't close my account I may well just throw caution to the wind and say exactly how I feel which is what I've just done Wink) Am I still welcome?

No worries mate! These is a time of renewal for the forums so things are bound to be a bit confusing for newbs. And yes, discussions tend to get pretty heated, but that's what happens when there's controversial topics at hand. I don't want to sound douchey, but you should thicken your skin and deal with it. It helps a lot IRL, so why shouldn't that do the trick here too?
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.

Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.

Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.

Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

Vote "yes" on Proposition 1321. Think of some kids. Some kids."

I used to have much thicker skin but as the years have gone by I've got less and less activist just for the sake of a quiet life. Just the same with gay rights, I used to be very vocal about it and coming out left, right, and centre but nowadays I hardly mention it at all.
