Yeah, that's a bit of a strange premise, isn't it? I can't speak for the OP, but one possibility would be that you intellectually have come to the conclusion that there is no personal God, but you're still emotionally bound to the trappings of religious belief. Have you ever been in a relationship where you rationally know that it is better to break it off, but you have a hard time going through with it? Of course, the comparison is lacking, because if you rationally stopped believing there is a God, what is there left to emotionally cling to?

Dharma for one. Religion is more than just belief, it's a path. While God may be gone, the path may remain.

At the end of the day, I suggest learning everything you can and just going from there. Do some delving to fully understand what you may or may not believe. Ultimately, your beliefs or lack of beliefs is your own personal decision and opinion.

Have as anyone ever told you that there's no free lunch?  We'll it isn't true, occasionally grandma or daddy will pony up for lunch.  But as a general rule, if you have to be bribed to believe something, it isn't true.  Religion offers no evidence, but promises rather ultimate benefits:  eternal life, a man in the sky watching your back, justice, etc.  And threatens rather ultimate harm:  eternal damnation and death.  But there's no more evidence of either of those things than there is of god.  The only benefit I can offer you for atheism is not having to worry about fictional eternal damnation.  Death, I'm afraid is a natural consequence of living.  No one is likely to arrive on you doorstep preaching atheism.  There are no benefits other than those naturally accruing from not believing a falsity.

Believing in fiction happens for many reasons.  In the case of religion it's usually either guilt because people you love want you to believe, or a need to feel that someone or thing has got your back.  But while I've felt that guilt, I've never actually believed, so I can't really give you any tips on how not to do it anymore than I can tell you how not to breath.  I don't believe for the simple reason that there's no real evidence of a god.  I don't really know how to believe in things for no reason.

You do realize that pretending to believe doesn't make you a theist, just an atheist in the closet right?

Welcome to the forum whether you believe in god or not.

It's best not to force yourself into believing or not believing. Would you really comfortable forcing yourself to be a devout Evangelical Christian? I doubt you would enjoy that, so why should you enjoy trying to force yourself to being an atheist?
