Why be good?
RE: Why be good?

That's on the same lines as asking if I am angry with Mickey Mouse.

It's also a pretty stupid notion, since it assumes that there's only one possible god. The one you happen to worship, which isn't even remotely the only christian version of god. And that's leaving out the muslims, the jews, the Hindus .... to be continued ad nauseum.

I'm disgusted with his fanclub at times. And that isn't discriminatory, since I'm including all of the above versions. I'm also disgusted with his ground crew when they fuck children and incite to violence or bigotry. Again, not in any way discriminatory, since it includes all of them.

Sorry, there's no anger with something I don't believe exists. Just a fundamental lack of interest I carry around since I was a child.

You're quite mistaken.  I've been in that situation twice, and that fact can be attested to personally by another person on this forum (Kitty Galore).

At no time during either ordeal did I even give a single thought to "God".

This caricature of atheists that you've constructed isn't even amusing, it's insulting.

Cthulhu Dreaming, if I could give you another rep I would.  You are most correct.  This is just a reworded version of "There's no such thing as an Atheist in a foxhole".

Bullshit.

Then get pissy when others judge them, despite "judge not lest ye be judged."
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Meh, somehow I don't think any amount of explanation is going to change Randy's (ill informed, presumptuous) views; his initial accusation that I'm just angry with god came in response to an extensive and detailed account of why I was angry with him, so it's either he isn't reading what's being written before running it all through the christian-spin cycle, or he's lying out his ass. I think we've officially ventured beyond the point where he actually cares what anyone else says, and have entered the part where he dismisses us all out of hand due to the fiat motivations he's trying to force upon us.

He'd rather argue strawmen, it seems. Rolleyes

A lot of us here seek truth. Problem for you is you have none to offer. Just a collection of myths and fantasies.

Aphorisms express general truths spoken or written in memorable form, so while the universality of the experience it expresses may be questioned, I question whether "each and every one" of the marines and soldiers you spoke with would agree with your assertion. Here's why:

According to Wikipedia,

We have two different sets of data, yours and Wansink's, that point in opposite directions. Since your anecdotal evidence seems at odds with the formal research performed by Wansink, I can't help wondering if there isn't some problem with your methodology or a bias in your reporting of the data you collected.

Maybe not, but I do have a question for you, Mike:

Are you suggesting that I should believe your eye-witness testimony concerning what you observed and reported in your written account above?

How does that survey say anything about atheists? It says that most religious people rely on religion more when staring at death. If anything, the data corroborates my experience. I sat in groups over two years with thousands of Marines. The overwhelming majority of them were very religious. I'm sure that helped them in battle. I didn't say anything about them losing their religion on the battlefield. (Although some few did.) That survey says absolutely nothing about atheists in foxholes.

As my experience is anecdotal, you should take it at that. If you choose to not believe that there are Marines and Soldiers out there that are smart enough to not buy into your death cult, I know ignorance is bliss. Have at it.

Let me ask a different way.

If you were called before a congressional committee investigating problems in the Veterans Adminstration, would you be willing to testify under oath to what you wrote?
