How many people here have looked deeply into politics? Or at least tried to discuss it on a forum dedicated to politics? It only took me one night on the "politicsforum" to realise I really had no idea what I was talking about with regards to the topic. If I retake the test in a week I don't know where I'll end up

I've looked into politics for some years but got bored with it and saw it for what it is,a sham.

chatpilot,
I understand your dislike for ( modern ) politics. At its best, politics is a battle of opposing ideas about how society can be best organised. Unfortunately, since the collapse of the USSR and the unification of Germany, that battle has largely gone. It will return....when I know not. When it does, maybe you will engage.

Not to bring up old posts but I do have a question

If you can suggest a better system and an example of it working I would be happy to look into it more. What does it mean for a system to "work"?
You can count on it bozo. Our constitution and our political system is supposed be government for the people,by the people and elections were supposed to give us that option to choose which candidate we feel best suits the needs of the people. But as in all things governed and run by the power elite there is always room for corruption which in turn defeats the purpose of elections. Our democratic system here in the U.S. is rife with government abuse of power, corruption, and greed.
I am of the opinion that the U.S. government system as a whole has an agenda what that agenda may be I cannot fully define, but it does obviously favor those in power as opposed to the people.I believe that whoever gets elected and decides that he wants to make changes and change that agenda is dealt with in one of two ways. The first option which is not as commonly used these days is government sanctioned assasination and the other which is more evident since the Clinton era is character assasination.Hence my opinion that it really does not matter who you put in office he or she is obligated to get with the program or be removed from office. Although this may drift into the realm of conspiracy theories a objective perusal of American government in history will reveal that some of these claims are if not entirely true at least partially true.

The small number of mega mega rich who " own " a huge percentage of the wealth of this planet will see nothing much wrong with capitalism. It " works " for them. And so on down the scale of wealth until reaching a point where the underclasses who own nothing do not see capitalism " working " for them. Somewhere along that scale are people like me, I own a few things but I am closer to the underclass ( my wealth could go tomorrow ) than I will ever be to the mega rich. I think that capitalism definitely doesn't " work " for the benefit of all, that is why I am a socialist. chatpilot, I get what you say. My point is that in your country and mine, we used to have a choice between " left " and " right " agendas, come election time. Since the demise of communism in Russia, the major parties in your country and mine compete to continue with a capitalist programme. Even when it's in the crisis it is today!

One flaw in that argument, I am a socialist and not exactly poor. I pay a whopping amount of taxes and do not complain about it. Okay, I am not Bill Gates either, or the sultan of Brunei. But still.

Most political systems are flawed not only by the system itself but as mentioned above by corruption on the part of those in the upper echelons of our society.

I don't know you but I guess you will be pretty close to me on the scale of wealth. Do you not consider yourself nearer the underclass than the mega rich? As a socialist, do you not have more affinity for the underclass and do you not want to see capitalism replaced eventually?

I am closer to zero than a million dollars, sure. I earn about 2 times the standard income in the Netherlands. More affinity with the underclass, sure, I have been there so I know how hard it can be. Capitalism replaced, the Netherlands isn't really a capitalist nation like the U.S. so I am not as gung ho to change our national politics as my more left colleagues. I am more the PVDA than the S.P. to coin the phrase. But I do concede that the most of the socialists would like the distribution of wealth more evenly than is the case now and rightfully so. But I also see that humans do need an incentive to strive to the best of their ability. Rewards do need to come for a job well done, not because it is a given right. But the split between rich and poor is to great at the moment. So in that aspect you are correct and your argument is not flawed.
