Yeah.  As a rule of thumb Stephen King adaptations pretty much suck.
I will say that Syfy Channel's 2009 version of Children of the Corn and ABC's 1997 version of The Shining (mini-series) are the best King adaptations I've seen.... very close to the original stories.

Dolores Claiborne was okay, and I feel that The Mist was pretty good, but I haven't actually read those two.
