It's an excellent article.
I don't at all see any anything negative to point out here other than a parent's stupidity and a teacher's nigh-heroic ability to stand up for herself. I would honestly love to see this brought to court after court. She shouldn't have to apoligize for stating the facts as they are and I'm glad to see a teacher stepping forth like this. It's school boards and parents like those in the article why science and math scores in this country is pitiful and we keep lowering standards to keep students passing. If anything, summer, I'd say that there's nothing to sigh over.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925 Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan
I sigh because this attitude:
Quote:Later, parents of one of the students complained to the principal that Hensley was rude to their daughter and accused her of giving the girl a bad grade on an assignment because of her “true Christian” religious views. The parents said that it was their intention to see that Hensley was fired from the district and that science classes in the district accommodate views that don’t contradict the Bible. is entirely too prevalent in many areas of North Carolina. And if it weren't for such bullshit, I'd have a deeper comfort level with the idea of having kids here, because I tend to love living here until I begin to look at education outside of college level. Quote: science classes in the district accommodate views that don’t contradict the Bible. Usually about now I begin to wonder why they don't demand that their kids' doctors drive out demons....but with morons of this class they would probably prefer that.
Is there any doubt that the union lost the civil war?

Thanks. I forgot to come back to this after this morning.
