one only needs to go on craigslist or even somewhere else to buy a gun with no licence.

Gun control isn't about preventing gun violence, it's about reducing it. The firearms that inflict the most damage in society are the ones targeted - for example handguns. Handguns have no place in civilised society, outside of law enforcement and armed security guards. They are by far the most lethal weapon used in mass shootings/massacres. Even if you did nothing about assault rifles and just controlled handguns, you would make a positive difference in the rate of gun violence.
