I've never understood the idea that atheism is even remotely nihilistic.
It doesn't have to be. Atheism just means you looked at the religious stuff, and rejected it. For the more nihilistic of us, once we realized the religion we'd been fed was lies, we wondered what else was. And that's when you start seeing a bleaker reality.
I haven't found much in terms of 'perks' in being nihilistic. I've said before, secular humanist is probably the way to go if you can avoid thinking it away. It's one of the reasons I'm not a big supporter of The TRUTH! and de-converting people. I think secular humanism is nonsense, just like religion. But I think both would lead to a happier life if you don't find them to be irrational.
