Personally, it would be refreshing to see a presidential candidate who identifies with no religion, and/or is an atheist...because I don't believe that religion has any place in government, nor on the campaign trail. If a presidential candidate was an atheist, then it would just be about the issues at hand, not about people selecting someone based on if they share the same religious views or not. Which are truly irrelevant to how well or poorly the person might govern the land.

This thread cracks me the fuck up. Asking a bunch of atheists to differentiate public office candidates based solely on religious affiliation is the same as asking if one prefers eating cat shit or dog shit.

Not to mention the thin chance that anyone running for a major public office in the US would ever profess to be anything but a xtian of some kind.  Frankly the protestants seem to be running more strongly crazy these day.  So I'm more than willing to roll the dice on a Catholic, thank you.

I fear that shall not happen for at least another century.

Even many democrats love hearing their candidate talk about their faith or how "God works in their lives." Even many people who despise the religious right can be pretty into God and spirituality and like voting for people who are the same way.

Even if the candidates were atheist/agnostic they would be sure to put on a mask of religiosity to look good or appeal to people.

I believe that is what Barack Obama basically did. He says he is a Christian, and I believe at some level he is.

But I get the sense he isn't really into religion that much and may have joined Michelle's baptist church in Chicago to help get in good with the politicians.

It would be better if people were just open and honest about it all and did not feel they needed to pretend
