So... I suppose that is a good sign.

But you think the dangers of kids getting involved in tarot/new age nonsense is minimal?

I very nearly did. But I might be the exception Undecided

I think a Catholic child might be troubled about the fate of Albus Dumbledore. As both a homosexual and a sorceror the state of his fictional soul in the afterlife cannot be promising.

I mean "gay" and wizard... sheehs pick one or the other if you want to get to heaven.... not both... Undecided

This has GOT to be a Poe.  It can't actually be this stupid and still breathe on its own.

At one point, I had a whole backstory of the history of wizarding and magic thought up about how magic could have evolved into the human species and given rise to many religious figures - but which also was a contributing factor the some wizards' attitudes of superiority to muggles because they not only could do magic, but those pitiful ignorant muggles actually worshiped as gods people the wizarding world knew were "just" wizards and that there were hundreds of thousands of other people who could do the exact same things as those religious figures so they aren't actually anything special.

Which then brings up the question of: if Jesus was just an ancient wizard with an evolved magical ability and not, as purported, the son of a deity, what might wizards be so in awe of that they would deem it worthy of worship? Would they see claims of a god as nothing more than a super powerful wizard? Does the magical world have a completely different mythology to muggles?

You didn't have to wait until JKR to "reveal" the Christian parallels in the HP books - they're obvious. Tongue

I thought the whole witch craft scare was really stupid. But then again, you're just trolling so I'm wasting my time here.

Yeah I noticed them even before the last book, but there were still silly people trying to say they were from the Demon or something. I'm glad she came out and made it official.

RE: On kids reading Harry Potter?
My kids both loved the Harry Potter series and have read many kids books containing magic characters like Lord of the Rings among many others.

When they were small, they also believed in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, the easter bunny and stork that brings babies.

Its always ridiculous when christoids get a bug up their asses and start ranting and raving about whatever nonsensical thing their idiotic leadership tells them to.  The whole brain-dead flock start bleating about whatever they're told to and ignore the fact that mythology is all around us.

Funny enough, the one book that isn't in my house is a bible.  I like what my kids read to have at least a tiny amount of plausibility and morality.

I wonder how many people here have read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies?

I have seen them all, and enjoyed them immensely. That said, I am not certain I would permit my (future) children to read them if indeed I had any.

If and when I find a humble, dutiful Catholic wife with whom to procreate with ( no contraceptives please!! Smile ) I think I might want to keep Jk Rowlings books out of their hands.

Idk, I just hear they can be a bad influence, and can lead kids to doing actual magic (wicca, tarot cards, Ouija boardss) instead of focusing on God and his son Jesus.

It makes me wonder, if Rowling is a Christian, as she claims to be, why do none of the wizards express a faith in Jesus?

Perhaps she she really was just "JK" on the whole christian thing Dodgy .

I suppose I won't be able to stop them from forming their own opinions after they become adults (pre 18 is a whole different ball park Wink !) but I should Id try to keep them on the xtian straight and narrow for as long as possible.

Any thoughts/concerns? Do the Potter books have an anti Christian message?

Here's hoping you don't breed.

I don't know...his kids could star in another remake of children of the corn.  That movie was old testament creepy fun.

Harry Potter magic is fairy tale magic. By the time kids are old enough to read the books they'll know it's impossible to fly around on a broomstick or get the washing up to do itself by muttering strange words and waving a stick at the sink.

J.K. meant for kids to read a book a year, to keep pace with the protagonists development. So you're right, they should be taking the stories as stories by the time they were meant to be read "The Philosopher's Stone".
