It's not free stuff, it's tax money. We're paying for the stuff that money goes to. So I wish people would realize how incredibly ignorant it is to call it "free stuff". And I am sick of our ineffectual congress, they're one of the biggest problems with our government, I have no idea how we ended up with that pile of slop sitting in the chairs of the capital building being payed for by our government. It's disgusting.

Personally, I think that people who think Bernie wants to give free handouts to everyone just don't know what they're talking about. It tends to be the same crowd that conflates democratic socialism with hard socialism.
The way to change Congress is to vote. I intend to vote in the Congressional election as well as the general one because I'd like to see our next president operating with a legislature that's a good bit less shitty.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

I saw my mom today and talked to her a bit about Bernie Sanders. I literally copy pasted the thread I wrote in the OP here to her in an email, and that 13 minutes of Hilary lying video. She says that a lot of it is probably just taken out of context and she didn't comment much on Bernie's democratic socialism, even after I explained to her what it was and when she said previously that she believes that capitalism is necessary for people to be motivated to work, which is why I was trying to explain to her that democratic socialism is still capitalism.
There's a lot of stuff I try to explain to people, but they just have no desire to listen. As I was trying to bring this up with my mom she started trying to talk over me numerous times, trying extremely hard to just change the subject. If it was just some friend then yeah I would have changed the subject immediately as I sensed some aversion to the topic, but it was my mom so I figured I'd try to press her on this issue a bit, it's a safe move for me.
Point is, there's a lot of people who just aren't open minded, don't really want to get bogged down by facts or opposing opinions. I tried to tell her that yeah, I do hear a lot of negative opinions about Bernie and Hilary, but the ones about Bernie just aren't factual because the people criticizing him don't even know what democratic socialism is, while you can see Hilary blatantly contradicting herself, which is why I urged my mom to watch that 13 minutes of Hilary Clinton lying video, just so she could get an idea.
This was all while being talked over, her trying hard to change the subject and make me forget what I was talking about. I noticed that seems to be a tactic with people who are either in a serious argument or just don't want to argue, they'll try to change the subject to something else or bring something up that's not even related to make you forget what you were saying and throw you off track. With her though I just think she's not interested in politics. She voted for Hilary anyways, she's one of those people that says you have to vote for Hilary so we can beat Trump.
If I only have these two options of Trump and Hilary, yeah I'm not voting. It's ridiculous that we only have two horrible options, then whoever gets into office will just get blocked by our absolute joke of congress, but I bet congress would love Trump. Go figure Trump is a big fan of Vladimir Putin too. I'm not feeling too good about this at all, in fact it makes me scared for our country. Ironic that one of the biggest issues facing us today, climate change, is supposedly going to be in the hands of either Hilary, who is funded by fossil fuel companies, or Trump who flat out denies climate change and is against the environmental protection agency.
Yeah I am really worried about this country. I can't even make a small difference, by trying to convince my parents of any of this stuff. Yeah she'll say "I know you do a lot of research", which means absolutely nothing. It might as well be like putting a report card on the fridge or a pat on the back. It makes me very, very worried.

I see the same problem with Sanders that I do with Drumpf...minus the boorish behavior, Bernie is basically a gentleman. Bernie's platform, like Drumpf's is designed to tickle the nutsacks of his supporters. It has no chance of surviving contact with Congress. 8 years from now we'll be hearing all about how Sanders "failed" to enact free college just like Obama "failed" to close Gitmo...despite submitting 7 plans to do exactly that to this do-nothing congress.
Bernie's voter base seems like a pretty politically aware/active crowd (oppositional slogans about naivete and free stuff notwithstanding), and that seems to be on an increasing basis as the race gets to the bluer states. If they muster the voting power to beat down the Hillary machine, they have a good chance of changing congress up as well. That's much tougher because of gerrymandering and all that shit, but it does happen. Congress could turn democrat regardless of who the president is, actually.
Yeah... and I might fuck a supermodel, too. Hey, it COULD happen.

What a well-reasoned argument, Min. You are aware that the majority party in congress does actually change during some elections, right?

The senate is possible given that the republicunts are likely to nominate a complete shithead.
The House?
After 2014:
Quote:House Partisan Balance
Party
114th Congress
Democratic
188 Dem
Republican
246 GOP
And even worse:
Quote:Incumbents in both chambers saw a high rate of retention after the 2014 elections. Close to 96 percent of the incumbents who ran for re-election won their races
Vacancies

Your an idealist and I totally understand that. I'm a Bernie supporter as well. As a human being, I just like him better than Hillary. I believe he is in this for the right reasons, and I also believe that he wants desperately to do what he says he's going to do. That being said, I'm pushing 50 years old and I know how this crap goes down. Candidates make all kinds of promises that they are going to change the world, and it never works out that way. I'll tell you this, your flat out wrong if you think Hillary is as bad of an option as Trump or Cruz. Hillary might seem like the status quo--treading water without making any progress. Trump and Cruz are the equivalent to chaining a cement block to common people and watching them try to swim. A lot of people are going to sink to the bottom and drown, and we'll lose about 20 years worth of social tolerance.
Voting isn't always about getting your way. It can just as much about denying assholes the ability to get theirs. It's not a sexy awe inspiring view of democracy, but it's effective and important. These candidates are all lying their asses off to get elected. As a Bernie supporter, I know he's being disingenuous about having an iron-clad way to get his policies implemented. For example: To make his free education package a reality, he needs states to chip in about 1/3 the total cost. Right now there are 31 Republican governors, 18 democratic governors, and 1 independent. There is zero chance that these asshats are going to chip in. In fact, assholes like Scott Walker in Wisconsin recently cut $250 million dollars from the University of Wisconsin system.
My guess is that your parents have seen this rodeo, and they are just trying to keep you from becoming disappointed in the process.
