It seems like so many people are for allowing businesses to refuse service to lgbtq people. Not just conservatives either. So I’m trying to understand what the difference is between “whites only” businesses vs “straights only”. Why is one unacceptable (and illegal), but the other is okay? I genuinely don’t understand how it’s different.

And then they cry persecution when the tables are turned on them, for having first persecuted others.
Not much. The latter is just the new acceptable target after people supporting the former were mostly pushed underground. Until recently.

The thing is, I’ve seen Atheists and left leaning people support the right to refuse service to gays, so I’m trying to figure out if these people also support allowing whites only businesses and if not, then I’m hoping they can explain the difference to me.

I haven't seen the atheist/left thing but would guess it's based somehow on business ownership rights. (I can sell my goods/service to whom ever I choose)

Also, I think a big part of it is that, unlike blackness, Jewishness, and Asian-ness, the argument is that gayness is at least somewhat possible to put in check. They say homosexuality is a choice, and to an extent, it is somewhat accurate, but the thing is, it’s basically a Hobson’s Choice: the choice is between repressing a part of yourself that isn’t inherently harmful (but is, in many cases, socially frowned upon, And many often fear for their fucking lives, including this case that happened THIS FUCKING WEEKEND), and embracing a lifestyle that’s largely harmless, and even helps make the world, if nothing else, a more colorful place.
It may technically be a choice, but it’s really not much of a choice.
