This is a hard one.
When using empathy to distinguish how people like to be treated, we usually take clues from how they treat others.
My answer would be a little of both.
So, treat others how you would like to be treated until you've gathered enough evidence to either keep doing the same thing or start treating them differently in accordance to how they treat others.
Unless they treat others badly, in which case treating them nicely may teach them to behave differently or treating them badly may make them see the error of their ways.
Perhaps a case by case basis is really the only answer.
Yeah, it's a hard one.

What if the person wants to be treated in such a way that one considers it morally unethical or conducive to problems later? Neither position is necessarily preferred by me. Most of us probably drank before we were legally allowed and generally through the help of an 'adult'. Now put yourself in the position of that 'adult'.
