Women earn less than Men
May 23, 2016 at 12:46 pm
There was some thread a few months back that disagreed with the idea that there is a gender wage gap in the US of A.
Wall Street Journal an interesting interactive chart on May 17 showing average wages for 446 professions, split by gender.
It's fascinating, I thought AF folks would enjoy taking a look at it. http://graphics.wsj.com/gender-pay-gap/ Women typically earn more than men in 7 of the professions out of those 446.

I suppose frugal businesses should only hire women. Hiring men would just be a waste of money.

Gross generalizations, Joe - - and yes, the childcare issues have to be a big factor - "family over career" is not a bad thing. I happen to be a single female, very committed to my job, and of course, the one that takes on the extra duty and never takes time off. I'm still invisible when any guy on the job starts talking.
No, this affect is due to a number of factors, starting with the old agrarian/patriarchal model that men earn the pay and women care for the children, which was set in stone in the USA until the 1960's, and is still around today. And it is based in sexism - recently a boss in a successful tech business came under fire for refusing to even interview female applicants for a position, because he stated that "men are just better at ____ and no woman would be competent". I loved this article about sexism by a trans man - it's a good read, you should check it out: http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/05/male...trans-men/

Interesting! It says that women in my field earn 96% as much as men. I feel pretty damn lucky.

I hope it came across, of course, that I was parodying the kind of people who don't think this is a real thing

For the nth time, there is no such thing as a "gender wage gap". Please don't take any articles that "proves" wage gap is real seriously.
It's called "earnings gap" and it has nothing to do with discrimination based on gender, this is a fact,I'm not making this up.
If you are genuinely interested in the topic, give this article a read, http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/harvar...le/2580405
It's by a Harvard professor Claudia Goldin, who happens to be a woman.
Please, for the love of God don't fall for one of those articles again.

Men earning more than women in 439 out of 446 American jobs is an interesting statistic, Pool. And it is caused by a multitude of factors, it's not only gender discrimination. I will go read your posted article, but I have witnessed discrimination and inequality personally. So neither of us can say that the other side is putting out false propaganda for their own purposes - what is needed is an unbiased look at ALL the factors, and ways for both sides to come together to find a way to alter this 439 out of 446 result into something more equitable.
