First collisions at the LHC with unprecedented Energy! (Ask a particle physisicist)

Saying that, when I worked at the ESO in Germany, the trained astrophysicist in the same office told me that he was the winning candidate for his job from a pool of 26. I, on the other hand got my job because I told the consulting firm in a telephone interview that I would be prepared to move to Germany within 10 days and would be prepared to accept the offered wage (which I didn't realise at the time was particularly low).

As far as I could tell we were both working on the same thing and doing software engineering. It really is the black hole of careers.

It is on!

This is the live view of the LHC beam status:

The 2040b/beam figure in the lower left (the display might change) means that each beam has 2040 bunches of protons, that's half the maximum capacity IIRC, but already really good. You can do the math how often they collide if you know that the tunnel is 27 km long. That means they go round 11000 times per second, and that times 2000 bunches means collisions happen roughly 22 Million times per second!
6500 GeV per beam means that it is running at the maximum energy for now, 13 TeV total.

Alex, is there any intention of converting some of your books to English?
Would you do this yourself (being a highly specialised field) or give to those that specialise in the mundane job of translating?
No God, No fear.

There are plans and there have been talks with the publisher, but we haven't yet found a suitable arrangement that would get them on the marked for an acceptable price. I would most likely translate them myself, possibly with a copy editor. Stay tuned Smile

As you can see above and below, the LHC is doing great. It is collecting data at an unprecedented rate and has long surpassed last year's batch. The question is now, are there discoveries in this summer's data? The next big conference with official announcements is ICHEP2016 which will start August 3rd. If there are startling discoveries, there will likely be a seminar scheduled at CERN before that.

So far, the rumours don't indicate any surprises, which is a bummer, especially since everyone was hoping that the slight excess seen in last year's data might hint at a new heavy particle, which would revolutionize the field

Allright! Today, the long-awaited week-long ICHEP conference kicks off with talks on the record-breaking data taken by the LHC experiments this year, dwarfing the performance of the machine of the past years. Is there a groundbreaking discovery in there? People suspect not, because such things would usually have been announced in a special seminar at CERN before the conference. But who knows, maybe there are some exciting developments after all. Stay tuned!

That, or there is a severely distressing discovery that people who do know are keeping quiet about it until they can figure out what to say or do.

Have babelfish translate them to Japanese, and then have babelfish translate that to English

Seems unlikely with 6000-8000 people involved with the experiments...
