When I beat him to the story about the Bronze Age discovery in Peterborough, no one bothers to say, 'Wow, someone beat our resident historian/archaeologist to a story about history/archaeology.'  No, it's nothing but, 'Poor Boru, so slow off the mark.  Dementia in one so young.  Sad.  So very, very sad.'

So, the official reason the police seem to be going with is that the cop was aiming for the autistic guy and accidentally shot the black dude...

The Florida police officer who shot and wounded an autistic man’s caretaker earlier this week was aiming at the patient, who he felt was a threat, when he accidentally missed and shot the wrong person, a police union chief said Thursday.

I guess they figured an idiot cop with terrible aim would play better with the public than a cop that intentionally shot a black man on the ground with his hands up.  Considering they cuffed the black guy after he was shot and the officer proclaimed he "didn't know" why he shot the guy, I'd say you'd have to be pretty gullible to buy this story.

Beats the fuck out of me how a person trained in the use of a rifle could miss a large man-sized stationary seated target at a range that would necessarily be short enough to determine that said target could reasonably be construed as a threat.

I would have respected them a lot more (that is to say, at all) if they had just said "We fucked up."
